From the ground up, the Columbus Alzheimer Care Center was designed and built to meet the unique needs of Alzheimer’s residents and their families. Every aspect of the center has been designed to accommodate those with dementia related disorders. Abundant, barrier-free open spaces provide plentiful room for those in the wandering stage of the disease. Natural lighting abounds and interior lighting is diffused to minimize harsh shadows which can cause confusion for Alzheimer’s residents. All surfaces and designs are subtle to minimize visual agitation. And outdoor areas include a secure courtyard and landscaped paths to allow for daytime walking and fresh air activities.
The center is also home to Casey’s Kids, an on-site daycare center that provides daily opportunities for intergenerational interaction. This unique offering has proven to be socially and emotionally beneficial to young and old alike, as children discover new “grandparents” and elders have the opportunity to maintain engaging connections with children.
